Description

Oberonia cavalerei (fmr. myosurus)

Oberonia cavalerei or Oberonia myosurus? We’ll preface this description with some name confusion, so base your purchase on the photos…we got this plant as Oberonia aff. myosurus. Some sources say that Oberonia myosurus is a synonym of Oberonia cavaleriei. Kew (Royal Botanic Gardens – Plants of the World Online) says Oberonia myosurus is now Phreatia inversa and Oberonia cavaleriei is the accurate name for Malaxsis myosurus. Accurate names can get so confusing!

We’ve grown nine different oberonias over the last 40 years and this is the only one (at least so far) that has had teret or cylindrical leaves. Common names can be strange, but this is cute: the mouse-tail like Oberonia (a mouthful…the actual name is easier to say!). These are neat MINIATURE plants; they’re interesting even when out-of-bloom due to the flecked/speckled foliage. The flowers are produced on an pendulous inflorescence and there are lots of them. The flowers are tiny. Very tiny. They’re cute though, and the plants are just lovely. In our experience, some oberonias MUST be grown mounted, others MUST be grown potted. We grow this species mounted on cork in intermediate light and it does very well for us.

We are selling well-rooted single-plant divisions mounted on cork. If you’re interested in multi-growth plants, please contact us!
