Description
Aerangis arachnopus
Aerangis arachnopus was first described in 1854, yet it remains relatively uncommon in cultivation. This medium-sized species produces long, zig-zag inflorescences with widely spaced flowers that create an elegant and distinctive display.
We grow our plants mounted to best showcase the arching inflorescences and individual flowers. As the blooms mature, they gradually reflex, creating a flatter appearance that highlights their unusual shape.
The species name arachnopus suggests a spider-like flower, although compared to some truly spider-flowered orchids, we think the resemblance requires a bit of imagination. Regardless of its name, the flowers are beautiful, with predominantly white segments tipped in soft peachy-pink. A mature plant carrying multiple inflorescences is a particularly striking sight.
Our plants originated from stock obtained from orchid expert Isobyl la Croix, who reported seeing this species growing on old citrus trees in the Congo. In nature, Aerangis arachnopus is found across Central Africa, including Cameroon, Gabon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire), and the Republic of the Congo.
Elegant, uncommon, and rewarding to grow, Aerangis arachnopus is a wonderful addition to any collection of African orchids.
We currently offer blooming-size divisions for sale.
