Description

Ancistrochilus rothschildianus

Ancistrochilus rothschildianus is one of tropical Africa’s more unusual orchids. This deciduous species is prized for its fascinating flowers and distinctive growth habit. Unlike many orchids that remain leafy year-round, Ancistrochilus rothschildianus has a distinct winter dormancy. During this rest period, the leaves are naturally shed, and the plant should be kept considerably drier until new growth begins. We’ve had plants bloom both while nearly leafless in spring and later with full foliage, making each flowering a little different.

The flowers are unlike almost anything else in an orchid collection. Long, narrow segments radiate from the center while the rich purple lip creates a striking contrast against the pale pink petals and sepals. Their unusual form gives the blooms an almost starfish-like appearance that immediately draws attention.

Much has been written about the flower’s fragrance, often with comparisons to fish. While it certainly isn’t a traditional floral perfume, we’ve never found it objectionable. Instead, it adds another layer of curiosity to an already remarkable species. One can’t help but wonder what pollinator nature had in mind—perhaps flies or another specialized insect—making it an intriguing example of orchid evolution.

In our greenhouse, we’ve had the best success growing this species in unglazed terracotta pots using a coarse bark and perlite mix. We also recommend repotting annually in spring, just as new growth begins, when the plant responds most favorably to fresh media.

For collectors interested in unusual orchids, Ancistrochilus rothschildianus is an unusual species whose distinctive appearance and seasonal growth cycle make it both challenging and rewarding. Be sure to look at the photo showing its conical pseudobulbs; they’re so distinctive that many growers compare them to Hershey’s Kisses!
