Description

Laelia harpophylla

Okay, technically this is a Cattleya now…but we still think of them as Laelias. I’ve read a lot of things online about them being tricky, but we’ve not found that to be the case! We’ve grown them mounted and in pots. Mounted is pretty, but they were “trickier” to keep wet enough during the growing season. We’ve grown them potted in terra cotta and plastic pots. Both have worked well with bark mix, but when it came time to repot, oh my gosh…the ones in terra cotta were “tricky” to get out of the pots. Their roots REALLY attach well! They grow in one of the brighter spots in our other greenhouse. When in active growth, we water them well. In the fall, when the growth slows, we cut back on the water. They reward us by blooming the following spring/summer. Look at their extraordinary lip! Gorgeous flowers! They are native to Brazil.
