Maxillaria
coccinea
I always enjoy
seeing photos of orchids growing naturally. For a wonderful in-situ image,
visit The Virtual Field Herbarium at http://herbaria.plants.ox.ac.uk/vfh/image/index.php?item=1071
. These are new to us...and in researching them I found it interesting
to note that it is speculated that M. coccinea may be pollinated by hummingbirds.
Their warm, bright color makes that easy to believe. The flowers do not
rise above the foliage, but do put on a great and colorful show.
